How can Genital Warts be Treated?

The ugly, ‘cauliflower appearance’ of genital warts is due to the condition which is similar to the regular variety but these specialize and are found inside and outside the sexual organs (including anus) of both men and women. The human papillomavirus that causes other strains (one of many) is responsible for these which can be passed on through sexual intercourse, even oral sex. This is one particular instance where using a condom will not always prevent the genital warts; women can be infected and be unaware of the situation for a long time making them easy to transmit to others.

Worryingly is the length of time it can take for the infection to form them; sometimes it can be a few months or even many years.Tracking down the carrier is problematic and of no use because it will be carried by every new person infected. There is large number of viruses, over one hundred in fact but it is the HPV6 strain that is responsible for ano-genital warts. Unless a woman is due for a routine medical examination by her gynecologist a woman may not discover the warts for some time hidden inside her genitals.

The problem is made worse by the environment that genital warts use to multiply, damp and moist areas; and this is exactly what they find in and around a woman’s genitals, plus some discharge may be present. Generally, the favored method of wart removal is with the use of extremely cold liquid nitrogen which is applied to the skin over the course of a few treatments after which it will die. The use of liquid nitrogen is dependant on the location of the infected area; this is a painless procedure but must be performed by a doctor.

Two further options are available to doctors, the traditional cauterizing the wart or the more modern but equally efficient laser process. Each genital warts treatment is dependent on where the infected area is but removal is no guarantee they will not return at some pint in the future. Designed to help a person’s immune system to fight the infection as well as destroy them, imiquimod can be used on ano-genital warts as well but once again, it cannot guarantee re-infection will not occur (even while it is being administered).

It is best to get a doctors consent to use imiquimod as it cannot be used in every circumstance including pregnancy, this is also the case when the skin around the area is inflamed and in particular, internally. Imiquimod can cause some unpleasant side effects which need to be watched for including blisters, aches all over the body, coughs and it can cause the genitals to itch but a doctor can provide more information abut this. Information provided here on genital warts is presented in good faith but is not intended nor can it replace the advice given by medical professionals.
